  • Is ones’ BMI > 30 kg/m?
  • Excess body fat around waist : Waist circumference of 94cm (37 inches) or more in European men, or 90cm (35.5 inches) or more in South Asian men , 102cm (40 inch) or more in American men?
  • Waist circumference of 80cm (31.5 inches) or more in European and South Asian women,88cm (35 inch) or more in American women?
  • High triglyceride levels (fats in the blood) >150 mg/dl?
  • Low levels of HDL (“good” cholesterol) in the blood:  HDL cholesterol reading of <1.7mmol/l (40 mg/dl)in males or <1.29mmol/l (50 mg/dl) in females?
  • High blood pressure that’s consistently 140/90 mmHg (some countries 130/85 mmHg) or higher?
  • An inability to control blood sugar levels (insulin resistance):  Fasting glucose test reading > 5.6mmol/L (110 mg/dl) or previously had diabetes?
  • Browning of folding of the skin for example neck and armpits?
  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
  • An increased risk of developing blood clots?
