What is it?

Bacterial infection that is not contagious.

  • Symptoms occur 2-10 days after exposure to when first infected.

Cause

  • Bacteria: Legionella
  • Bacteria found in water areas (rivers, lakes, baths, spas, hospitals, buildings containing bathroom facilities, air conditioning devices).

Symptoms

  • Headache which is on and off or a constant headache longer than 24 hours?
  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72 hours?
  • Slow heart beat with fever episode?
  • Aching, painful muscles, muscle cramps/spasms/stiffness?
  • Initially a persistent dry cough which has now become a chesty cough with yellow/green and/or blood stained phlegm?
  • Chest pain?
  • Dry cough longer than three weeks or breathing difficulties?
  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
  • Diarrhoea?
  • Slurred speech and drowsiness?
