Intussusception

What is it?

Intussusception is a condition where the bowel is crushed (‘telescopes’) in on itself and/or where movement of stool is blocked causing a bowel blockage, this can lead to a tear/hole in the intestines.

  • This causes the bowel walls to press on one another, blocking the bowel.
  • This can lead to reduced blood flow to that part of the bowel.
  • It is a bit like a getting a sock turned inside itself
  • It is the most common cause of bowel blockage in infants and young children.
  • It tends to happen between the ages of three months  to 18 months.
