Herpetic Whitlow (Herpes infection on nail)

What is it?

An abscess of the end of the finger caused by the herpes simplex virus (the same virus family as the ‘cold sore virus’ and ‘genital herpes virus’).

  • Initially it usually affects the area around the fingertip and base of the nail skin and not the nail itself.

Cause

Symptoms

  • Fingertip suddenly becomes red, swollen and extremely painful?
  • Small white blisters develop underneath the skin of the finger?
  • Blister breaks to release fluid, eventually crusting over?

Complications /Information to beware of/General tips:

General tips

  • You should cover the whitlow with a light dressing so the infection doesn’t spread any further.
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses until the infection has healed, to stop the virus spreading to your eyes.
  • You can take an over-the-counter painkiller such as paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain relief  (if suitable, speak to your pharmacist if unsure)
  • Do not attempt to drain the fluid, as this may cause the virus to spread or cause a bacterial infection.
