What is it?

It is enlarged breast tissue or glands in men or boys.

Cause

Medication

  • Anti-androgens used to treat prostate enlargement, prostate cancer and some other conditions. Examples include flutamide, finasteride (Proscar, Propecia), Bicalutamide (Casodex) and spironolactone (Aldactone).
  • Anabolic steroids and androgens
  • Hormonal medication i.e. Cyproterone acetate,  diethylstilbestrol
  • Cancer treatment (chemotherapy) medication i.e. dastinib, sunitinib, Methotrexate, cyclophosphamide, carmustine, etoposide, cytarabine, melphalan, bleomycin, cisplatin, vincristine, procarbazine
  • H.I.V/ AIDS medications: Efavirenz (Sustiva) ,Protease inhibitors (saquinavir, indinavir, nelfinavir, ritonavir, lopinavir), reverse transcriptase inhibitors (stavudine, zidovudine, lamivudine)
  • Anti-anxiety medications, such as diazepam (Valium).
  • Tricyclic antidepressants
  • SSRI antidepressants  i.e. Fluoxetine (Prozac), Paroxetine (Seroxat)
  • Antidepressant i.e. Venlafaxine (Effexor)
  • Antibiotics i.e. metronidazole (Flagyl)
  • Antifungal medication i.e. Ketoconazole (prolonged oral use)
  • Heartburn and/or indigestion and/or ulcer medications i.e. H2 Antagonists
  • Proton pump ulcer medication and Misoprostol
  • Heart medications for arrhythmias i.e. digoxin (Lanoxin), Amiodarone
  • Blood pressure medication i.e. calcium channel blockers
  • Diuretic medication i.e. spironolactone
  • Ace inhibitors i.e. captopril , lisinopril (Zestril)
  • Central acting hypertensive medication i.e.  clonidine (Catapres)
  • Anti- nausea and vomiting medication
  • Antipsychotic medications i.e. aripiprazole, sulpiride, Haloperidol, olanzapine, paliperidone (high doses), risperidone (high doses), ziprasidone
  • Cholesterol medication: atorvastatin (Lipitor), pravastatin (Lipostat) , rosuvastatin (Crestor)
  • Triglyceride medication i.e. fenofibrate  (Supralip)
  • Anti-histamine medication i.e. Cetirizine (zirtek), Loratadine (Clartyn)
  • Pain and epilepsy relief i.e. Gabapentin (Neurontin),pregabalin (lyrica)
  • Pain relief medication i.e. penicillamine, sulindac
  • Breathing medication i.e. theophylline

Symptoms

  • Pain and/or swelling in breast or armpit area?
  • Enlarged areola (area around your nipple)- Change in the way nipple looks in any way?
