What is it?

Ulcers that develop into tunnels that run from one part of your digestive system to another and/or in some cases, to the bladder, vagina, anus or skin.

Symptoms

Small fistulas don’t usually cause symptoms. However, larger fistulas can become infected and cause symptoms, such as:

  • Constant, throbbing pain?
  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats?
  • Blood or pus in your stools?
  • Foul smelling leakage of stools or mucus into your underwear?
  • Leakage of intestinal contents from an abdominal wound onto the skin?
  • Diarrhoea?
  • Abdominal pain?
  • Rapid heart rate?
  • Dehydration?
