What is it?

It is the inflammation (hot, red and swelling) of the costochrondial joint that joins the breast bone (sternum) to one’s ribs causing mainly pain.

  • It tends to occur in young adults and can be confused with a heart attack.

  • Tenderness over the breast plane (pain if one puts pressure on the ribs)?
  • Sharp pain in one’s upper ribs especially when breathing in or out?
  • Ribs hurt when doing strenuous exercise or physical activity where ribs move suddenly?
  • Ribs hurt when coughing or sneezing?
  • Short of breath and/or breathing difficulties?
