Brain Diseases and Brain cancer

What is it?

Cancer or a non-cancerous lump (brain disease), or something pressing against the nerves, destruction of the white matter, and/or defect in structure of the brain, it then affects nerves and spinal cords thus affecting the bodily functions.


Concussion

  • This condition can have similar symptoms to a concussion i.e. blow to head
  • Hear a ‘thunder clap’ in one head and/or stroke and/or behaviour and/or mood changes, memory loss or any other symptoms in this chapter – do not wait, seek urgent medical attention.
  • Rest and reduce screen time.
  • Any head injury relevant assessments must be preformed with in 72 hours.
  • If symptoms persist after initial check up, seek medical attention.
  • Symptoms include:
    • Behaviour and/or mood changes
    • Memory loss
    • Difficult in learning things
    • Balance issues
    • Shaking
    • Uncontrolled movements and/or  jerk movements
    • Speech issues

  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72 hours?
  • Balance and dizziness problems can cause vomiting?
  • Headache which is on and off or a constant headache longer than 24 hours?
  • Headaches (not alleviated by painkillers and are worse in mornings associated with nausea and vomiting)?
  • Headaches can be dull and persistent, throbbing headaches occurring less often?
  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
  • Unexplained weight loss?
  • Any unknown lumps or swellings on any part of body?
  • Confusion?
  • Difficult to concentrate and/or memory  problems?
  • Difficulty using arms, body and legs,lack of stamina and/or walking difficulties?
  • Slurred speech?
  • Blurred vision/Visual loss (altered vision or visual hallucinations)?
  • Sensitivity to every day noise and/or ringing noise within and/or difficulty hearing?
  • Constant hiccups?
  • Muscular weakness and loss of control of  movements (irregular movements which aren’t rhythmic or repetitive)?
  • Altered sensations (strange smells, hallucinations relating to sense of smell)?
  • Difficulty in swallowing?
  • Irritated anxiety and depressed?
  • Temper outbursts?
  • Low mood and depression?
  • High sex drive?

Unique symptoms in Babies and children:

Signs and symptoms of brain tumors in children are often the same as those in adults.

Some symptoms, however, are unique to children, including:

  • Infants: Soft spot on the skull where the plates have not yet closed (fontanelle) may bulge, and the baby may become fussy when her head is touched?
  • Headache that awakens a child from sleep?
  • Turning his/her head in order to see something, as opposed to moving his or her eyes?
  • Difficult to concentrate / difficulty in concentrating/memory problems?
  • Behavioral changes?
  • Projectile vomiting (vomit travelling a far distance)?

Medical Emergency Condition

  • Stroke
  • Seizures
  • Beware of bleeding in the skull symptoms:
    • Severe headache
    • Stiff neck
    • Vomiting
    • Change in mental state, such as confusion
    • Speaking difficulties, such as slurred speech
    • Changes in vision, such as double vision
    • loss of coordination and balance
    • Paralysis of some or all of the facial muscles
