Botryomycosis

What is it?

A rare bacteria skin condition that causes an infection to skin, bones and muscles slowly (months to develop) and is very similar to Actinomycosis except that there are different bacterium involved and botryomycosis does not usually affect any organs except the skin (mainly).

Cause

  • Bacteria:
    • Staphylococci
    • E.coli
    • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
    • Proteus

Symptoms

  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72 hours?
  • Sore throat longer than seven days or more?
  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
  • Aching, painful muscles, muscle cramps/spasms/stiffness?
  • Hard lumps and skin nodules?
  • Large warts-like skin condition?
  • Skin ulcers?
  • Pus-filled spots?
  • Abscesses which contain yellow lumpy puss (Sulphur looking) on the skin?
  • Osteomyelitis (bone infection), lack of joint movement and disfigurement around or near an ulcer area?
