Ascariasis (Round Worm)

What is it?

A common protozoa infection that cause abdominal pain and diarrhoea.
Humans ingest ascarid worms without knowing, the worms lay their eggs in the intestine.

  • They then travel in the blood to the lungs and return to the intestine and lay more eggs.
  • Symptoms do vary; some don’t develop symptoms at all.
  • Children are more affected than adults.

It occurs mainly in world regions of:

  • Central and South America
  • Africa
  • Southeast Asia

Cause

  • Parasite: Ascaris lumbricoides
  • Eating contaminated food and drink
  • Poor sanitisation
  • Human faeces used as fertiliser  in soil
  • Poor personal hygiene

Symptoms

Symptoms do vary:

  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
  • Diarrhoea?
  • Dry cough longer than three weeks and/or breathing difficulties?
