Symptoms of meningitis

Under the age of 2 yrs:

  • Excessive sleeping (drowsy, floppy, listless, not responding) or irritated (doesn’t like being handled)?
  • Vomiting?
  • Feeling poorly (refusing food?
  • Crying a lot, moaning or high-pitched crying?
  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats?
  • Skin looks blotchy and pale?
  • Cold extremities (cold hands and feet)?
  • Purpuric (spotty rash that does not turn white when apply pressure)?
  • Bulging soft spot (fontanel) on their head?
  • Being stiff, jerk/seizure fits?
  • Rapid breathing and grunting?

Adults/Children

  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats?
  • Headache (severe)?
  • Stiff neck?
  • Vomiting and nausea?
  • Hate of bright lights?
  • Confusion/delirious (irritated)?
  • Sleepiness (drowsy, difficult to wake?
  • Cold hands and feet?
  • Severe muscle pain?
  • Stomach cramps and diarrhoea?
  • Dislike bright light?
  • Seizure (fits) (referral instantly)?
  • Purpuric Spot/rash (does not turn white under pressure)?
  • Being stiff, jerk/seizure fits?
  • Rapid breathing and grunting?
