General Tips Sore Throat
- Gargle salt with warm water. Salt is a natural antiseptic product
- Brush the tongue (removing the build up on your tongue can lessen the soreness of the throat).
- Keep a bowl of hot water to ventilate room and keep room well ventilated so throat doesn’t dry out.
- Glycerine, honey and lemon mixed with warm water may help to soothe throat and /or a dry tickly cough
- Use clove oil (unless sensitive and not on open areas)
- Avoid very hot drinks or any foods/drink e.g. fizzy drinks/spices that aggravate sore throat.
- Allow hot foods to cool
- Avoid eating hard foods/chew foods
- Avoid hard, sharp and tough food
- Avoid food or drinks that are sugary
- Avoid anything that makes your teeth sensitive
- Use a straw, if have mouth is uncomfortable only with cold liquids, hot liquids will burn throat.
- Cold drinks, ice cream or jelly may help to soothe throat.
- Cover up mouth where you can, consider wearing a face mask.
- Avoid kissing.
- Avoid crowded areas.
- Avoid sharing cutlery, utensils, cups, foods and towels.
- Drink plenty of water (avoid coffee, tea, fizzy drinks, alcohol drinks) to prevent dehydration.
- Air conditioned room can cause a dry throat and make throat symptoms worst.
- Cut down on alcohol consumption.
- Cut down or stop smoking
- Eat a healthy diet
- One should always:
- Maintain good oral hygiene
- Avoid closing the windows (fresh air is good for the immune system).
- Consider to use an air humidifier (dry air can contribute to a sore throat, a humidifier may help by adding moisture back. Both warm- and cool-mist humidifiers are effective).
- Adjust ones thermostat as warm rooms can dry ones throat.
