General Tips Prevent Sunburn

  • No sunscreen is 100% effect. Additional measures are required.
  • Seek shade at hottest time between 11am –3pm or if not possible, apply sun lotions liberally and regularly, make sure it is a high SPF factor.
  • Cover up to protect skin when possible with cotton clothes (long sleeved, trousers), hats (broad rim) and use wrap around UV filtered sunglasses.
  • Regularly shower or bath in cool water. (Don’t forget to use sun care lotions after your wash if going out during the day in the sun.)
  • Use cool water sprays.
  • Product advice/information to prevent sunburn.

Methods to prevent dehydration:

  • Drink plenty of water at least 2-3 litres daily (if you don’t have enough water your urine will change colour from pale yellow to dark smelly urine ) to prevent dehydration
  • Always keep bottles of water with you.
  • Avoid raw and uncooked food especially meats and fish (include shell fish) avoid mayonnaise and sauces, peeled fruits, eggs, salads, tap water, ice creams, ice cubes, raw vegetables.
  • Boiled water products are fine (e.g. tea, coffee, hot chocolate) but not excessively.
  • Products safe include:
    (a) Sealed bottled water from a major manufacturer
    (b) Eat recently prepared hot, cooked food
    (c) Canned food or in sealed packs
    (d) Fresh bread
    (e) Unpeeled fruit
  • Brush your teeth with bottled water.
  • Make sure you are vaccinated.
  • Avoid drinking unsafe water and ice.
  • People who misuse drugs and alcohol can get dehydrated, please avoid.
  • Stop smoking (causes dehydration) or try not to smoke.
  • People who sweat a lot and are physically active can get dehydrated, please drink plenty of water.
  • Always have Travel Insurance
  • If an EU citizen one can apply for medical treatment in Europe scheme before you go to a destination in Europe.

Females

  • Always wipe from front to back.
  • If taking a contraceptive and one has diarrhoea, one’s tablets may not be as effective. Use barrier methods during diarrhoea period and seven days after last episode.

Look out for signs of heat exhaustion (If so seek medical advice)

Signs of heat exhaustion

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Cramps
  • Pale skin
  • High temperature

If heat exhaustion not treated or getting worse then it may be heat stroke
IF SO, SEEK URGENT MEDICAL ADVICE.

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Increased thirst
  • Sudden rise in temperature
  • Confusion
  • Convulsions
  • Aggression
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Dehydration symptoms

What to do if an emergency?

  • Call emergency services
  • While waiting increase ventilation, open windows or use a fan.
  • Cool them down by loosening clothing or wrap them in a damp sheet or sprinkle them with cool water
  • If conscious give them water to drink.
